FAQ

What if I don't know which package I need?

When you're booking a year or more out, it can be challenging to know timelines and budgets ahead of time. To keep things simple, all that's required to reserve your date is a $500 deposit, which goes towards your total. I will work with you to choose the package that best fits your needs as the date gets closer.

When will we shoot posed portraits?

Most clients choose to do a formal portrait session at their temple. To get the most out of your portrait session, I recommend scheduling your shoot in the days or weeks leading up to your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, rather than on the day itself. This gives us a chance to capture images of your child and immediate family without the day-of pressure and time constraints.

Of course, you are also welcome to schedule your temple portraits on the Mitzvah day. This can be more convenient because you only need to do hair and makeup once, and you may have extended family members you want to include in the photos who are only in town that day. Many families also like to book a second portrait shoot at their party venue, before the celebration begins. This is another option for including extended family members who may only be in town for one day. (See the Whole Package, Option 2, above.)

If you prefer a casual outdoor shoot to a formal shoot at the synagogue, that is an option as well.

Do you normally shoot the service?

Most synagogues in the DC area do not allow photography during the service. One of the few locations that does is Washington Hebrew Congregation -- so if that's your synagogue, you're in luck! I have done more than 40 shoots at WHC over the years and am very familiar with their temple, clergy, and protocols. You can see examples of B'nei Mitzvahs shot in WHC's main Sanctuary and Small Chapel in my "Services" gallery.

Why might I want additional hours of coverage?

"The Whole Package" options are ideal for most clients. Six hours is typically enough time to photograph the Mitzvah service (if your synagogue allows), plus party coverage that evening/afternoon. This package also makes sense for those who don't need coverage of the service, but do want photos of a reception or luncheon following their service, or would like a second portrait session.

For those who need more than 6 hours of coverage, additional hours can be added to any package at a rate of $375/hour. This option is ideal for parents who:
1. Want photos of a luncheon/reception/event, in addition to the service and party.
2. Would like photos of their child's Mitzvah rehearsal.
3. Have a longer-than-average celebration planned.

When will we get our photos?

You will receive an online gallery link with your edited photos within 4 weeks (sometimes less depending on the season I photograph your simcha). You can download all the full-resolution photos from the gallery, share them, select your favorites, and order prints.

How much do albums cost?

An heirloom album can be added to any package for $1,000. This price includes:
• A 10x10-inch, 30-page album*
• Leather or linen hardcover
• Thick, archival paper with luster finish
• Up to 100 images of your choice
• Professional layout & design services
• Up to 3 rounds of edits
• Shipping

*Additional pages, photos, and a larger size (12x12 inches) are available for an additional fee.

How many photos will we receive?

For packages with one photographer, you can expect 70-90+ photos per hour of coverage. With two shooters, you can expect 90-120+ photos per hour.

For portrait sessions, it's typical to receive 50+ final images. For mini sessions (up to 30 minutes), it's typical to receive 20+ final images.

Do you also shoot weddings & family portraits?

While I primarily shoot B'nei Mitzvahs, I do accept a small number of weddings and family portrait sessions each year. If you're interested in either service, feel free to reach out! You can find examples of my wedding and family photography at www.laceyannweddings.com.
